Ya nos habían avisado hacía unas semanas, pero me da no se qué verlo ya impreso oficial junto a tantos otros libros ejemplares.

We made it into the FUNDALECTURA - IBBY Colombia 2011 Highly Recommended Books list!

"Historia de un árbol" written by Ricardo Cie, was selected for +6 years old readers and you can see the complete list (in Spanish) in PDF formate here.

We had received the unofficial news a few weeks ago, but I am so excited to see the name of the book printed next to such exceptional children's books.

So its time to celebrate!

La semana había iniciado plácida y bien planeada. Me senté a primera hora con la taza caliente de rigor a revisar mi correo y me voy encontrando un mensaje del equipo de arte de Orsai. Confieso que no tenía la más remota idea de qué se trataba y lo que leí en el mensaje era descabellado. Querían nada menos que ¡cuatro ilustraciones en tres días!

This work week was looking like one of the best planned in a long time and I was feeling really good about it. But as I sat down with my morning brew to read my email, I found this strange new address appear next to one of the messages in my inbox. It came from the art team of a magazine named Orsai. At first I had no clue what I was in for and as I read on I felt this undertow at my feet: They needed 4 illustrations in 3 days!

Sin embargo, había estado mascullando la idea de iniciar una carpeta para artículos de revista. Y son de esas coincidencias algo sospechosas que esta resultaba ser en efecto...una revista. Literaria para terminar de hacerla, y hermosísima.

Y para rematar aun más, el texto es de Luis Chaves.

I tried not to panic and recalled that I had been nibbling at the idea of making a portfolio with editorial illustration for magazines. And here, out of the blue, a magazine that was requiring my services. A literary magazine at that and such a beautiful one!

To top it off, the text was by a much admired Costa Rican writer called Luis Chaves.

Año Nuevo, trabajos nuevos - New Year, new jobs

Hemos comenzado el año nuevos trabajos sorpresivamente diversos: dos juegos de ilustraciones en tinta para Llewellyn, un cuadro de mariposas pedido por una amiga como regalo para un mariposario recién inaugurado, el diseño de un par de tarjetas postales con temas costarricenses que serán impresos a mano por la serígrafa canadiense francesa/residente en Tamarindo, Cynthia Deslauriers, la etiqueta para la cerveza inaugural de Cervecería Dinama llamada "Pacuare Pale Ale" & un nuevo libro para Katha, titulado "Cómo pesar a un elefante". ¡Así que andamos muy felizmente multiculturales!

Casi todo está en etapa de bocetos & estoy muy orgullosa de mí misma por mantener todo en orden hasta el momento. Todo ha sido claramente etiquetado, clasificado y guardado en alguna de mis dos carpetas de trabajo. Nunca antes se ha visto algo así en mi taller, así que debería de salir hoy en la noche y fijarme si es que las estrellas se alinearon en forma de cuadrado.

2012 started with a surprisingly diverse array of jobs: two sets of Pen & Ink illustrations for Llewellyn, a comission piece ordered by a friend for an upcoming butterfly garden here in Costa Rica, postcards with Costa Rican themes to be hand printed by French Canadian/Tamarindo resident printmaker Cynthia Deslauriers, a label for -independent Costa Rican/Belgian brewery- Cervecería Dinama's inaugural beer, "Pacuare Pale Ale" & a new book for Katha titled "How to Weight an Elephant". So at the moment we are very happily multicultural!

Almost everything is in sketch mode right now & I am so proud of the fact that I am being orderly with all this. Everything is properly labeled, classified and kept neatly in one of two portfolios! This has never happened before. Must step out tonight to see if the stars aligned in square arrangement.

Cada vez que estoy en ese limbo que existe entre proyecto, me doy a la tarea de probar algunos de las ideas sin sentido que andan rondando mi cabeza. He aquí algunos productos de estos tentempiés creativos. (el que está a la cabecera de esta entrada está basada en el libro "La Loca de Gandoca" de la autora costarricense Anacristina Rossi, y fue hecha para la campaña "La Banda Sonora de la Película que Jamás vas a Ver" de la Biblioteca Nacional de Costa Rica)

Anytime I'm in between projects, its the perfect time to try my hand at those little, random things that float around in my head. Here are some of the results from previous creative snacktimes. (The illustration at the top of this entry is based on the book "La Loca de Gandoca", written by the Costa Rican author, Anacristina Rossi. It was created for the "La Banda Sonora de la Película que Jamás vas a Ver" campaign, launched by the National Library of Costa Rica)

¡He terminado!

I am done!

Después de meses de intenso trabajo, incluídas revisiones, re-revisiones, dedos con callos y un desorden permanente de migajas y acuarelas (cosas que talvez no fuera sano combinar. Digo, por aquello del amarillo cadmio y el azul cobalto) en la mesa, logré finalmente terminar las ilustraciones para Katha.

After several months of intense work, which included many revisions, bruised fingertips and a permanent mess of crumbs and watercolors on my table (Now that I think of it, combining food and paints was probably not the healthiest ideas...I mean, considering cadmium yellow and cobalt blue), I was finally able to finish the illustrations for Katha.

Como había escrito antes, Katha es una organización sin fines de lucro de India, cuyo objetivo es mejorar la calidad de vida y el futuro de los niños en condiciones marginales, por medio de la lectura y la educación. El cuento budista que ilustré para ellos se llama "Por el Amor de un Gato" y está en pleno proceso de publicación!

As I had mentioned before, Katha is a non profit organization which operates in India. Its main objective is to better the lives and future of children in marginal areas through education and reading habits. This Buddhist story I illustrated for them is called "For the Love of a Cat" and it is being layed out right now for its upcoming publication!

Por otro lado, me atreví a lanzarme a la aventura de escribir una idea que me bailoteaba por la cabeza desde hace rato. ¿Han visto que la mayoría de los libros para bebés de animales tienen siempre los mismos? La vaca, la gallina, el ratón, el gato, el perro, el conejo y el osito. ¡Con tanta variedad de animales alrededor nuestro!

More good news: I have decided to jump into the adventure that is writing! This is an idea that has been fluttering around in my head for a while now. You know how animal books for toddlers usually include the same animals over and over? The cow, the hen, the mouse, cat, dog, rabbit and little bear. With so much cuddly biodiversity surrounding us!

I have decided to write and illustrate my own book on rainforest animals of Costa Rica!

Justo hoy termino la última pieza para completar la maqueta que he de enviar a diferentes editoriales, a ver si alguien pica. ¡Deséenme suerte!

I will be finishing my last piece today to complete my book dummy. This I will be pitching to several publishers. Let's see if somebody picks it up, finds it fabulous and decides to give me a contract. Wish me luck!

Grupo Amanuense realizará el lanzamiento de "Historia de un Árbol", escrito por Ricardo Cie e ilustrado por nada más y nada menos que yo ☺, en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara!

"Historia de un Árbol" (Story of a Tree), written by Ricardo Cie and illustrated by no other than me ☺, will be released officially by Grupo Amanuense in the Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair)!

Es inexplicablemente emocionante ver la historia y sus ilustraciones tomar la forma y la sensación de un libro ya impreso. Darse cuenta que finalmente está aquí algo que has planeado y en lo que has trabajado por meses, no deja de impresionar.

It is very exciting to see the story and illustrations take on the form and feel of an actual, printed book. To realize that something you have planned and worked on for several months never ceases to be exhilarating.

El autor dará una charla el 3 de diciembre, 2009, a las 12:30 en el salón Juan José Arreola, por si alguien está por allí cerca y quiere darse una vuelta.

Ha pasado demasiado tiempo desde mi última actualización. Pasa como siempre que tengo que organizarme mejor, pero las buenas noticias es que me he ocupado en lo que más ansío hacer: libros para niños!
It's been too long since I last made an update. I still have to learn how to manage my time better. But the good news is that I've been busy working on what I love best: Children's books!

Hace unos meses, recibí un mensaje de Valia Libenson, editora del maravilloso Grupo Amanuense, una editorial guatemalteca con un fuerte compromiso social. Y he ilustrado para ellos un cuento escrito por Ricardo Cie, sobre un árbol que no quiso quedarse quieto. He aquí una pequeña muestra.
A few months ago, I received a message from Valia Libenson, editor of the wonderful Grupo Amanuense. This is a Guatemalan publisher with a strong social commitment. I illustrated a story written by Ricardo Cie for them, about a tree that wouldn't stay still. Here's a little taste.

Me he embarcado en otro libro junto con Katha, una organización sin fines de lucro en India cuya misión es aliviar la pobreza por medio de la educación y la lectura de calidad para niños. El cuento llamado "Por el Amor de un Gato", es una historia budista sobre un artista y su gato. Por supuesto, estoy doblemente emocionada y agradezco la buena fortuna.
I have also embarked on the creation of a book along with Katha, a non profit organization in India. Katha's mission is to aleviate poverty through high quality education and reading for children. The book is titled "For the Love of a Cat" and its a Buddhist story about an artist and his cat. Needless to say I am doubly excited and thanking my stars.

A few weeks back, I was contacted by Aline Pereira from Paper Tigers, who told me that they were working on a new feature on children's book awards and wanted to interview me for it!
Hace algunas semanas, fui contactada por Aline Pereira de Paper Tigers, quien me comunicó que estaban redactando un artículo sobre premios de libros infantiles para la cual querían hacerme una entrevista!

Needless to say I was very happily surprised.
Por supuesto que fue una feliz sorpresa para mi.

I was interviewed by Marjorie Coughlan, associate editor in the UK, who is very kind and pleasing to exchange emails with. She also has the best words of encouragement that a new illustrator can have: My child would love a book on coatimundis, ocelots and aracaris!
Fui entrevistada por Marjorie Coughlan, la editora asociada en el Reino Unido, quien es una corresponsal de correo electrónico bien agradable y amable, además de tener una de las mejores frases de apoyo que un ilustrador nuevo pueda recibir: A mi chico le encantaría un libros sobre pizotes, ocelotes y tucancillos!

The trip to Tokyo was absolutely wonderful. I saw, ate and learned so much and it was all so satisfying!
El viaje a Tokio fue absolutamente maravilloso. Vi, comí y aprendí tanto!

That is me sitting in front of 150 people for the ACCU Symposium. I did not sleep the entire night before (and slept little the previous few nights) and was a nervous wreck, can you tell?
Esa soy yo sentada frente a 150 personas durante el Simposio del ACCU. No había dormido nada la noche anterior (y muy poco las noches anteriores as esta) y estaba hecha un saco de nervios. ¿se nota?

Nevertheless, it was a very rewarding experience and of course, I learned a whole lot. I felt like such a novice speaking next to Karina Bolasco from Philippines, Alaeldin Elgizouli Naeim from Sudan (the winner of the Second Place), Tajima Yukihiko and Tanaka Naoto from Japan. I also met a good deal of wonderful people, like Takeshi Matsumoto for example, who is the founder of the Chihiro Art Museums in Tokyo and Azumino. Their collection of children's books illustrations of about 12000 pieces by 168 artists from 28 countries. And the best news is, Mr. Matsumoto is interested in buying something from me! So I sent in a catalog of my pieces and am keeping my fingers crossed for now. With any luck, I'll be the first Costa Rican illustrator to be in his collection.
De todas formas, fue una experiencia muy provechosa y aprendí miles. Me sentí tan novata hablando a la par de Karina Bolasco de Filipinas, Alaeldin Elgizouli Naeim de Sudán (el ganador del Segundo Lugar), Tajima Yukihiko y Tanaka Naoto de Japón. También conocí a tanta gente que me recibieron maravillosamente, como por ejemplo Takeshi Matsumoto, quien es el fundador de los Museos de Arte Chihiro en Tokyo y Azumino. Su colección de ilustraciones de libros para niños comprende unas 12000 piezas hechas por 128 artistas de 28 países. Lo mejor de todo es que el Sr. Matsumoto está interesado en adquirir algo del trabajo mío! Así que le envíe un catálogo de mis piezas y mantengo los dedos cruzados. Con suerte y voy a ser la primera ilustradora costarricense en su colección.

In the meantime, still working on the Sebastian inks and the Turtle book.

I have been keeping busy preparing for the ACCU - NOMA Symposium, and I have to admit that I am rather nervous about it. The paper, video and photos for my presentation are done, and now I just have to figure out what I am going to say for ten minutes. You can see the video here:

The Pen & Inks for the Sebastian project are still going, albeit slower than I would like. It is incredible how much time drawing little lines take me.
Las tintas para el proyecto Sebastian están todavía en proceso, aunque más lento de lo que quisiera. Es increíble el tiempo que me toma hacer líneas diminutas.

I am also very excited about this new project that landed on my lap. It is a children's book done for Pachanga Kids. My contact is Yazmin Ross, a Mexican journalist and writer who has already published several books here in Costa Rica. This book will be about the birth of a green turtle in Tortuguero National Park, based on a story written by Rodolfo Dada, a Costa Rican writer and poet. We are still figuring out the pacing between pages, but I wanted to post a couple of -very- early sketches.
Finalmente, estoy muy emocionada de un nuevo proyecto. Es un libro de para niños que será publicado por Pachanga Kids, cuyo contacto es Yazmin Ross, quien es una reportera y escritora mexicana que ya ha publicado varios libros en Costa Rica. El libro será sobre el nacimiento de una tortuguita verde en el Parque Nacional Tortuguero y estamos todavía tratando de armar la maqueta del librito. Igual, no me aguanté las ganas de poner aquí un par de bocetos -muy, pero muy- preliminares.

....that a Pen & Ink drawing took as long and as much concentration as an oil painting. I half believed him at the time and now, I am much closer to preaching it myself. I am refering to the "Sebastian" inks, which take me about 3 to 4 full days each after the pencil drawing is finished. At the end of the day, I feel like jumping out of my skin and running away somewhere. It's a little bit crazy. But I guess it's worth it....

En ese entonces, le medio creía y ahora, estoy completamente convencida de que tenía razón. Todo esto viene a que estoy haciendo las tintas finales de "Sebastian", y que cada una me toma de 3 a 4 días completos, después de haber finalizado el dibujo a lápiz. Al final del día, tengo ganas de salir corriendo. Es un poco inaudita la situación. Pero supongo que valen la pena....

Preparing for NOMA/Alistándome para NOMA

The holiday season as come and gone and frankly, it's all a haze. I just remember many gifts, sunny days at the river and too much good food.
El fin de año vino y se fue, y francamente no me acuerdo de mucho más que muchos regalos, días soleados en el río y demasiada buena comida.

Now I'm back to work and pretty happy about it. Still inking Sebastian pen&inks and preparing material to take to the NOMA symposium to which, I have been invited! I get to go to Tokyo for a few days (much too few I'm afraid) to participate in the exhibition opening and a symposium about children's books.
Ahora estoy de vuelta al trabajo y bastante feliz por eso. Todavía estoy entintando las ilustraciones de Sebastian y preparando material para llevar al simposio de NOMA, al cual estoy invitada! Así que iré a Tokio por unos pocos días (demasiados pocos días) a participar en la inauguración de la exhibición y un simposio sobre libros para niños.

I am to write a short paper on the current situation of children's books in Costa Rica, take photos and make a short, short video. For this last part, I have recruited the help of my two brothers-in-law for the music part of it. It's going to be fun! But I need to have it all done and sent out before the end of January....so, have to get back to work for now!
Tengo la tarea de escribir un ensayo corto sobre la situación actual de libros para niños en Costa Rica, tomar fotografías y hacer un video cortititico. Para esta última parte he recrutado dos de mis cuñados para que compogan la música, así que va a estar divertido! Lo único es que tengo que entregarlo antes del final de enero....así que, manos a la obra!

Ah and a little interesting note, the word symposium comes from the Greek verb sympotein which means "to drink together", since that's exactly what it was originally, a drinking party!
Ah y una nota interesante, la palabra simposio viene del griego sympotein, que significa "beber juntos", ya que aparentemente esto es lo que originalmente era, una fiesta para tomar!

I've been keeping very busy lately, going down my long to do list before our trip to Paris and working on the collaboration project named "Sebastian"
Me he mantenido bastante ocupada ultimamente, revisando la larga lista de cosas por hacer antes del viaje y trabajando al mismo tiempo en el proyecto de colaboración llamado "Sebastian"

One of my best friends refered me to one of his friends at Brown (univ.) who is a writer, joined by a printmaker. Their plan is to make a limited hand printed & hand bound edition of a children's book for adults. It's a story of the 16 lives (and deaths) of Sebastian, one spread for each life, and this is where I come in: I will be making the illustrations.
Uno de mis mejores amigos me refirió a un amigo suyo de la universidad de Brown, quien es un escritor colaborando con una grabadora (mujer que hace grabados, no el aparato audio) para este proyecto. El plan suyo es crear un tiraje limitado de un libro de niños para adultos, impresos y encuadernados a mano. El libro está conformado por las historias de las 16 vidas (y muertes) de Sebastian, una ilustración de dos páginas por cada vida o muerte. Y aquí es donde entro yo: soy quien hará dichas ilustraciones.

We are almost done with the sketches phase and I have started to ink one, just because I was unable to keep myself from doing it. More to come in a few days...

NOMA happiness!/Felicidad NOMA!

After much toiling & moiling, my NOMA Concours entry is done, gone and has been received by the NOMA people!
Después de bastante hacer y deshacer, logré terminar mis ilustraciones para el NOMA Concours. Ya las envié y he recibido una nota departe de la gente NOMA de que ya los recibieron, sanos & salvos!

I got invaluable help from Mani Güeuigdinapi, who referred me to Kuna lore, art and stories. The story that came up was named Nadi & Xiao Lan, two girls, one Kuna and one Chinese, best friends who live and go to school in mainland Panamá. One day they go back to Kuna Yala to visit Nadi's grandmother and embark in the great adventure of witnessing Kuna celebrations, hearing Kuna stories and cooking Kuna food. In the end, Xiao Lan's father decides to share a little bit of the Chinese culture with the Kuna children by telling the story of Chang'Er, her white hare and their flight to the moon.
Recibí la ayuda invaluable de Mani Güeuigdinapi, quien me refirió a la cultura Kuna, su arte y sus historias. El cuento que surgió entonces se llamó Nadi & Xiao Lan, dos niñas que son mejores amigas, la una kuna y la otra china, que viven y van juntas a la escuela en Panamá. Un día toman rumbo a Kuna Yala a visitar la abuelita de Nadi y se embarcan en una gran aventura. Vieron celebraciones kuna, escucharon historias kuna y cocinaron comida kuna. Al final del cuento, el padre de Xiao Lan decide compartir un poquito de la cultura china con los niños kuna contándoles la histora de Chang'Er, su conejo blanco y su escape a la luna.

It's been a good couple of weeks I daresay...three projects going on at once, albeit one is a tiny watercolor commision and the other is "selfemployment", but are still very exciting, all three of them.
Me atrevo a decir que han pasado un par de buenas semanas....tres proyectos al mismo tiempo, aunque uno es la comisión de una mini acuarela y la otra es "auto empleo", pero bueno, los tres son igual de emocionantes.

The Llewellyn job is a series of six black and white illustrations. I love doing these, since Pen and Ink is one of my favorite techniques (which I learned from a great prof. a few years ago back in school) and women is one of my favorite subjects. It's on sketch phase at the moment, moving on from thumbnails to 1:1 scale sketches that is.
El trabajo para Llewellyn es una serie de ilustraciones en blanco y negro. Me encanta hacerlas, ya que la tinta china es una de mis técnicas favoritas (aprendí de un gran profesor hace unos años en la U) y uno de mis temas favoritos para ilustrar es la mujer. Ahorita está en la fase de bocetos, pasando de miniaturas a bocetos escala 1 a 1.

As for the watercolor, it's a small portrait of two abyssinian cats, which a couple of friends want to give as a wedding gift to another couple of friends who live in Norway.

Got a happy email today about another illustration job with Llewellyn (Here is the first one I did for them at the beginning of the year) and with a little bit of good luck, I will hopefully be doing drawing pen and ink goddesses in a few days.
Recibí un correo feliz departe de Llewellyn solicitándome otro trabajo de ilustración (Aquí está el primer trabajo que hice para ellos a principio de año) y con un poco de buena suerte, estaré ojalá en unos días haciendo dibujos en tinta de diosas.

Now to match the exciting news, I have a very exciting and very unfinished papercut on the table. It's my second illustration of five I mean to enter to the NOMA Concours for Picture Book Illustrations this coming September.
Ahora bien, para acompañar estas noticias tan emocionantes, tengo una muy emocionante y muy incompleta ilustración en papel cortado sobre mi mesa. Es la segunda ilustración de cinco que pretendo enviar al NOMA Concours for Picture Book Illustrations para este Setiembre.

I had to kill some time between errand and errand yesterday and thought it might be a good idea to put it to good use, so I payed a visit to the Museo de Oro located in downtown San José. I arrived after some rumble and tumble in the Costa Rican public bus system and was greeted by a pleasant surprise: Wednesdays are free!
Tenía que matar tiempo entre vuelta y vuelta, y pensé que sería bueno hacer algo productivo, así que pasé a visitar el Museo de Oro en San José centro. Cuando llegué después de un poco de sube y baja en el sistema de transporte público costarricense, me encontré con la grata sorpresa de que los miércoles son gratis!

Once inside, I was greeted by a somewhat "churchy" atmosphere. It was soothingly calm, dark and cool, so different from the tropical day-to-day events happening outside. In the gallery for temporary exhibits, there was a show of nine young local artists that was short and sweet. They were all pretty contemporary approaches to contemporary issues, and I learned the exhibit was conceived for an event organized by the IDB Cultural Center. Al entrar, fui recibida por una ambiente un tanto "de iglesia". Estaba tranquilo, oscuro y fresco, bastante contraste con los eventos diarios que sucedían afuera (y arriba, ya que el museo está bajo tierra). En la galería de exhibiciones temporales encontré una pequeña muestra de artistas jóvenes. Todos tenían maneras muy contemporáneas de abordar temas contemporános, y me enteré que el evento fue concebido por el Centro Cultural IDB. Then on to the permanent exhibit, which was my main goal and displays wonderful Precolombian art, mostly in gold, jade and ceramics. The pieces in the museum never cease to amaze me, it seems that the representation of animal and human form is solved in the most unexpected ways: alternating a figurative approach with strong abstraction, combining painted patterns with textured surfaces, using the shapes the specific techniques promote.
Y después proseguí con el objetivo principal de mi visita: la exhibición permanente, que dispone de piezas maravillosas de arte Precolombino, especialmente en oro, jade y cerámica. Las piezas en este museo nunca dejan de impresionarme, la representación de la forma animal y humana se resuelve de las formas más inesperadas: alternando una fuerte abstracción con un enfoque figurativo, con la combinación de patrones pintados y superficies de textura, y el uso de formas que las técnicas específicas de cada obra facilitan.
