My first papercut ketubah! - ¡Mi primer ketubah en papel troquelado!

Come to think of it, it is my first Ketubah ever!
Maybe someday I get to make a cutout silver mezuzah, like Sarah, my RISD classmate and friend suggested.

Ahora que lo pienso, es el primer ketubah que he hecho en la vida.
Quizás algún día me atreva a hacer un mezuzah en plata troquelada, como lo sugirió mi amiga y compañera de RISD, Sarah.

New books to come - Nuevos libros por venir

Between the end/beginning of year work rush, a studio/home move & the Holiday season, things have finally starting to settle down enough for me to take a breath and on other -important, albeit less urgent- things. Things like updating my blog.

First and foremost, I hope everybody had a wonderful time during the 2011-2012 festivities. Have a very belated "Happy New Year" wish.

Also many illustrations I recently created were for new books to come, which for me is always cause for celebration. I worked on three upcoming books for Llewellyn which always means I get to have fun creating pretty images and attempt to tap into the intangible while doing it.

Two other books are for children and I have to keep under wraps for a little while longer while they come out from the press. I will just say (because I cannot help myself) that one is about a tiny turtle and the other one about an elephant.

Las cosas finalmente se han apaciguado suficiente -entre las carreras de trabajo de fin de año, una pasada de taller/casa y la temporada de fiestas- para realizar trabajos que, aunque menos urgentes, son igual de importantes. Trabajos, como por ejemplo, actualizar el blog.

Primero que nada, espero que todo el mundo haya pasado de maravilla estas pasadas fiestas. Les deseo un muy atrasado "¡Feliz Año Nuevo!"

Por otro lado, he creado muchas ilustraciones para varios libros por venir, lo cual siempre es algo que me alegra. Trabajé en tres libros para Llewellyn lo cual siempre es una bonita oportunidad para crear imágenes bonitas e intentar a la vez, plasmar lo intangible.

Los otros dos libros son para niños, pero tengo que mantenerlos en secreto un ratito más, mientras esperamos que salgan de las imprentas. Lo único que diré, porque no me aguanto las ganas, es que uno es sobre una tortuguita y el otro sobre un elefante.

Hace un par de días recibí un email departe de Valia Libenson, directora editorial del fabuloso Grupo Amanuense con el título "Ahora sí, es oficial!". Contenía una excelente noticia:

"Historia de un árbol", escrito por Ricardo Cie, fue seleccionado para lectores de 6 años en adelante y pueden ver la lista completa en formato PDF aquí.

Ya nos habían avisado hacía unas semanas, pero me da no se qué verlo ya impreso oficial junto a tantos otros libros ejemplares.

Tiempo de celebrar, entonces.

A couple of days ago, Valia Libenson, editorial director at Editorial Amanuense sent me an email with the subject "It's official now" with great news:

We made it into the FUNDALECTURA - IBBY Colombia 2011 Highly Recommended Books list!

"Historia de un árbol" written by Ricardo Cie, was selected for +6 years old readers and you can see the complete list (in Spanish) in PDF formate here.

We had received the unofficial news a few weeks ago, but I am so excited to see the name of the book printed next to such exceptional children's books.

So its time to celebrate!

Oportunidades de urgencia - Emergency opportunities

La semana había iniciado plácida y bien planeada. Me senté a primera hora con la taza caliente de rigor a revisar mi correo y me voy encontrando un mensaje del equipo de arte de Orsai. Confieso que no tenía la más remota idea de qué se trataba y lo que leí en el mensaje era descabellado. Querían nada menos que ¡cuatro ilustraciones en tres días!

This work week was looking like one of the best planned in a long time and I was feeling really good about it. But as I sat down with my morning brew to read my email, I found this strange new address appear next to one of the messages in my inbox. It came from the art team of a magazine named Orsai. At first I had no clue what I was in for and as I read on I felt this undertow at my feet: They needed 4 illustrations in 3 days!

Sin embargo, había estado mascullando la idea de iniciar una carpeta para artículos de revista. Y son de esas coincidencias algo sospechosas que esta resultaba ser en efecto...una revista. Literaria para terminar de hacerla, y hermosísima.

Y para rematar aun más, el texto es de Luis Chaves.

I tried not to panic and recalled that I had been nibbling at the idea of making a portfolio with editorial illustration for magazines. And here, out of the blue, a magazine that was requiring my services. A literary magazine at that and such a beautiful one!

To top it off, the text was by a much admired Costa Rican writer called Luis Chaves.

Así que no me quedó de otra que aprovechar esta pepita de oro disfrazada de "palmada". He aquí parte de los resultados:

So I was left with no alternative than to take on this golden opportunity disguised as insanity. Here is part of the results:

Año Nuevo, trabajos nuevos - New Year, new jobs

Hemos comenzado el año nuevos trabajos sorpresivamente diversos: dos juegos de ilustraciones en tinta para Llewellyn, un cuadro de mariposas pedido por una amiga como regalo para un mariposario recién inaugurado, el diseño de un par de tarjetas postales con temas costarricenses que serán impresos a mano por la serígrafa canadiense francesa/residente en Tamarindo, Cynthia Deslauriers, la etiqueta para la cerveza inaugural de Cervecería Dinama llamada "Pacuare Pale Ale" & un nuevo libro para Katha, titulado "Cómo pesar a un elefante". ¡Así que andamos muy felizmente multiculturales!

Casi todo está en etapa de bocetos & estoy muy orgullosa de mí misma por mantener todo en orden hasta el momento. Todo ha sido claramente etiquetado, clasificado y guardado en alguna de mis dos carpetas de trabajo. Nunca antes se ha visto algo así en mi taller, así que debería de salir hoy en la noche y fijarme si es que las estrellas se alinearon en forma de cuadrado.

2012 started with a surprisingly diverse array of jobs: two sets of Pen & Ink illustrations for Llewellyn, a comission piece ordered by a friend for an upcoming butterfly garden here in Costa Rica, postcards with Costa Rican themes to be hand printed by French Canadian/Tamarindo resident printmaker Cynthia Deslauriers, a label for -independent Costa Rican/Belgian brewery- Cervecería Dinama's inaugural beer, "Pacuare Pale Ale" & a new book for Katha titled "How to Weight an Elephant". So at the moment we are very happily multicultural!

Almost everything is in sketch mode right now & I am so proud of the fact that I am being orderly with all this. Everything is properly labeled, classified and kept neatly in one of two portfolios! This has never happened before. Must step out tonight to see if the stars aligned in square arrangement.

¡Finalmente! - Finally!

El maravilloso y esperado "Sebastian", impreso y encuadernado a mano por Kathryn Eshbaugh de Hello Martha, escrito por Michael Stewart de la Univ. de Brown, e ilustrado por su servidora!

Les invito a la presentación del libro en "The Wooden Shipman" el 27 de Agosto a las 6pm! Donde los libros van a estar en exhibición y a la venta, al igual que las ilustraciones originales e impresiones de las mismas.
